A cottage saved by two sisters
Oakhurst Cottage, a small timber-framed building dating from the late 16th or early 17th century, was bought by the Allfrey sisters in 1937 to save its tenants from eviction, before being passed to the National Trust in 1954 on the condition it was never let to well-off tenants.
A glimpse of a labourer's life
The cottage is presented as it might have looked when lived in by an agricultural labourer's family in the 19th century, with a simple cottage garden of fruit, vegetables and herbs, and can only be visited by pre-booked guided tour given its small size.
